Step 1. Choose your portrait picture
The first step to commissioning a portrait is to find the right picture to have made. If you do not have a picture yet, but plan to take one for this purpose, check out our photo guide for helpful hints and guidance. It is best to make sure the photo makes the subject look good. If you do not like the way you look in the photo, then please choose another one. Do not expect the artist to make the person look vastly better than he or she looks in the photo.
Please be aware of the background in your photo. For example, you might have a beautiful photo of your grandchild, but in the background there are many useless items that will clutter the painting. In that case, you have several options: You can e.g. tell our artists to use a flat background of any color you choose or you can tell them to paint the annoying details out of the picture as if it was never there. It's easy - just mention it in the comments box, right after you upload the photo.
It is also possible to combine photos. If e.g. you have a picture in which you look good and another picture with a beautiful background you can combine them in order to get the good picture of you with the beautiful background behind you in the painting. More elaborate compilations can also be undertaken - if you can imagine it, our fantastically skilled artists can paint it.
It is best if the photo has a high resolution, as lower resolutions tend to make it hard for the artists to paint all the details. Files sizes of 200KB to 500 KB normally work fine, while anything less than 100 KB has the potential to be problematic.
