Step 1. Filling the frame
For beginners portrait photography with a basic camera it is best to take the photograph as close up as possible and to fill the viewfinder. If your camera has a zoom then it should be about midway rather than on the highest zoom possible which can lead to blur in the photo and less detail in the subject.
It is also good to capture the characteristics of the subject if there is a specific pose that is typical to the that person, it may be that the whole face is not visible but the pose is a strong representation of the subject and may have meaning to friends and family.
