Step 2. Lighting
When taking portrait photos the most flattering light is to use natural light without the use of a flash. Photographing the subject outdoors or by a large north facing window will work well for most photos and be sure to look away from the sun to avoid squinting. In most situations it is best to avoid using a flash as this may cause the subject to have red eye and can take away some of the natural colour of the subject.
Indoor portrait photography - If it is necessary to take the photograph indoors then try to find a room with plenty of light and have your subject near a large window.
Outdoor portrait photography - If your subject is outdoors then a bright but overcast day is good where the cloud is not too heavy to ensure some light is still getting through. If the day is sunny then you can use a reflector or electronic flash to fill in shadows underneath the eyes.
